Several months ago, someone posted Goethe’s full quote on providence moving on their Facebook page. I read it over and over. I’ve known the portion of the quote “The Moment One Definitely Commits Oneself, then Providence Moves Too” for many years.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.”

I was first introduced to the quote in a training almost 15 years ago, yet I had never seen or read or taken the time to look up the full quote. I remember when I first read the quote all those years ago. I read it over and over then too. I remember wanting to know what it meant that ‘Providence’ would move. I remember pondering what commitment was and how your commitment affects what you get in life.

Definition of Providence:

God, especially when conceived as omnisciently directing the universe and the affairs of humankind with wise benevolence.  dictionary.com

Definition of Commit:

to give in trust or charge; consign.  dictionary.com

As I read this quote now, I realized that I understand it. I understand it more deeply than I ever would have imagined. I have experienced it over and over in my life. When one commits, the universe shows up for you. Many would call in the Law of Attraction. Those who know Neville, would call it ‘Nevilling’. Others would call it ‘Sourcing’. It’s all of those things, yet Goethe says it so beautiful and so eloquently. In utter simplicity, we are always getting what we commit to. If we aren’t committed, then we don’t get much. When we do commit, then we get it all. So, the question becomes….

Do You Have What You Want?

Getting what we want in life requires commitment and it requires action. Are you committed? Are you willing to take action and move to a space of commitment? Commitment is a choice and it’s an energy. It’s a choice to say “YES, I’M COMMITTED”. It’s an energy because the moment you choose, that choice begins to draw energy to you. It draws energy from the universe to support you to get what you want.

The biggest challenge is that we live in a physical universe and things in a physical universe sometimes take time to manifest themselves. Often we aren’t patient enough and then we begin to doubt our choice and our commitment. Yet, the better thing to do would be to simply remain strong in your commitment and when something comes up that feels like it isn’t supportive, try asking these questions…

  • What do I need to clear?
  • What is this showing me?
  • What do I need to heal?
  • What do I need to let go of?
  • What or who is requiring forgiveness?
  • What am I afraid of?

When things come up that don’t feel supportive to your commitment, you have to realize that you are just being given an opportunity to remain committed to your commitment. It’s not a challenge to walk away from it, it’s a challenge to stick with it. The question… Are you willing?
